Mayor Jerry Brown says zero waste can protect the environment, enhance the local economy, and serve social justice. AU By Peter Montague The City Council of Oakland, California has formally adopted a goal of zero waste by 2020. The {resolution} was first proposed by Mayor {Jerry Brown} in December 2005 and was adopted by City Council without opposition on March 7, 2006. Oakland is a port city of 400,000 on San Francisco Bay. The City Council's resolution directs the Public Works Agency and the Mayor's Office to develop a Zero Waste Strategic Plan. In adopting the zero waste goal, the City Council noted that it will serve three purposes: environmental protection, economic development, and social equity.
